Urgent WhatsApp update for iPhone and Mac after zero click hack

WhatsApp has released emergency updates for iPhone and Mac after uncovering a high severity zero click vulnerability. The flaw allowed attackers to trigger processing of content from an arbitrary URL on a target device without any tap or download. The company says a small number of users may already have been targeted. Apple has issued related system patches, and WhatsApp’s updates are rolling out now.

Who is affected

  • WhatsApp for iOS.

  • WhatsApp Business for iOS.

  • WhatsApp for Mac.

What to do now

  • Update WhatsApp on iPhone and Mac to the latest available version.

  • Update iOS, iPadOS, and macOS to the latest available versions.

  • Turn on automatic updates for apps and operating systems.

  • Review WhatsApp’s linked devices list and remove any you do not recognise.

  • Be cautious with unexpected messages, even from known contacts.

Why it matters

Zero click exploits are attractive to attackers because they require no user interaction. With Apple hardware popular among executives and WhatsApp used by an estimated billions of people worldwide, successful compromises can lead to data theft, credential harvesting, eavesdropping, and follow on attacks.

Android users are not impacted by this issue, but enabling automatic updates remains strongly recommended to stay protected against future vulnerabilities.
