OpenAI and Stripe Launch Instant Checkout, Ushering in a New Era of AI Shopping

The familiar rhythm of online shopping—search, scroll, cart, checkout—may soon be disrupted. On Wednesday, OpenAI and Stripe unveiled a new Instant Checkout feature for ChatGPT, marking a significant leap toward AI-powered commerce that could reshape how consumers buy products online.

The feature, powered by a new open-source Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), allows users to move seamlessly from idea to purchase within a chat. It is launching first with U.S.-based Etsy sellers before expanding to Shopify’s massive merchant base, including well-known brands such as Glossier, Skims, Spanx and Vuori.

From Chat to Cart in Seconds

Unlike social media shopping, which integrates products into user feeds, Instant Checkout embeds commerce directly into conversations. Stripe’s payment network and fraud prevention tools give ACP immediate reach, enabling millions of businesses to plug into the system.

Because the protocol is open, other AI assistants like Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, or even TikTok’s emerging AI tools could integrate the same technology. If widely adopted, conversational shopping could spread faster than brands are prepared for, challenging the dominance of Google search and Amazon as the starting points for e-commerce.

A Merchant-First Approach

OpenAI product lead Michelle Fradin emphasized that the decision to keep ACP open-source was designed to make life easier for sellers and developers. “The primary goal we had was making something incredibly easy for the entire ecosystem to adopt,” she said.

While some brands may hesitate—concerned about ceding control of the customer relationship or managing fees—many see the frictionless path to new customers as worth the trade-off. Merchants eager to surface their products within ChatGPT must provide rich, structured “product feeds” with detailed descriptions, up-to-date prices and availability.

This emerging discipline, dubbed AIO (AI Optimization), is already being described as the successor to SEO. Just as search engines once dictated how product listings were written, AI assistants may soon shape how brands present themselves online.

The Bigger Shift in Online Shopping

With ACP in place, ChatGPT effectively becomes a new gatekeeper for product recommendations, replacing traditional search results, Amazon’s suggestion engine, and even review sites. The model decides what products to surface based on data quality, not a fixed formula—raising questions about transparency and future monetization.

For now, Fradin said recommendations remain entirely AI-driven. “The best way today to ensure your product has the best chance of being chosen is to make sure we have the richest information possible,” she noted.

What Comes Next

OpenAI confirmed it is working with additional major retailers beyond Etsy and Shopify, though names have not yet been disclosed. With ticket prices for entry into ChatGPT’s shopping ecosystem as low as providing structured product data, many brands are racing to get their items AI-ready.

The launch of Instant Checkout suggests that, for the first time in decades, the foundations of e-commerce may be shifting. If ACP catches on, the next era of online shopping will not start with a Google search or an Amazon scroll, but with a simple question to an AI assistant.
