Alarming Surge in Data Breaches Calls for Vigilant Security Measures

A recent report underscores the escalating severity of data breaches, stressing the importance of reinforced cybersecurity practices. The prevalence of data breaches has reached unprecedented levels, with over 353 million Americans falling victim to such incidents last year alone.

The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) has released its alarming 2023 report, shedding light on the surge in data breaches. Eva Vasquez, President and CEO of the ITRC, expressed shock at the findings, stating, “We’re witnessing over 3,200 breaches in a single year, marking a staggering 72% increase from the previous record set in 2021.”

According to the ITRC, the sectors most frequently targeted include healthcare, financial services, and professional services, with manufacturing and education also experiencing significant breaches. The data targeted by cybercriminals typically encompasses social security numbers, passwords, email, and physical addresses. Once acquired, this sensitive information can be exploited for fraudulent credit card applications or as a basis for phishing scams and other deceptive tactics.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center’s latest statistics reveal a troubling trend, with 96 Illinois companies reporting data breaches in 2022, a substantial rise from 41 incidents reported in the previous year. Vasquez emphasizes the inevitability of data breaches, stating, “It’s not a question of if, but when you will be affected. The impact is often not realized until the information is misused.”

To stay informed about potential breaches involving companies with whom individuals have dealings, Vasquez advises visiting IdTheftCenter.org/notified. The website offers a search function by company name and the option to set alerts for future breaches.

In response to the growing threat, Vasquez advises immediate protective measures. Signing up for a credit freeze through major credit reporting bureaus—TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian—can be done in mere minutes and offers a significant safeguard. Additionally, the adoption of two-factor authentication for digital accounts and the regular updating of passwords are crucial steps in bolstering one’s defense against the ever-increasing risk of data breaches.
