Menlo Security’s latest report details a surge in cybersecurity risks coinciding with the adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT in daily business operations.

According to Andrew Harding, VP of Product Marketing at Menlo Security, AI integration is a double-edged sword. “While AI can significantly boost productivity and insights, it also introduces new vulnerabilities that traditional controls simply can’t manage,” Harding shared with VentureBeat.

The statistics are telling—a staggering 100% increase in visits to generative AI sites by enterprise users within just six months, and a 64% rise in power users. This sweeping incorporation into everyday tasks has flung open the doors to new cyber threats.

Menlo Security’s report highlights the ineffective nature of current security policies that are domain-specific and fail to address the evolving landscape of generative AI platforms. One particularly troubling finding is the 80% increase in file uploads to generative AI sites, which poses a direct threat to data security.

Generative AI’s potential to supercharge phishing schemes is another grave concern. “What we’re seeing is an evolution of phishing—AI-powered, and more cunning than ever,” said Harding, emphasizing the need for real-time phishing defenses that can stop these threats in their tracks.

Tracing back the origins, generative AI has been a slow burn, developing from OpenAI’s GPT-1 in 2018 to Google Brain’s PaLM and then to the public frenzy with OpenAI’s DALL-E and ChatGPT. Rapidly, these tools have become staples in our digital toolkit, but not without introducing significant risks that businesses are only beginning to grapple with.

The challenges are multifaceted—AI systems may inadvertently perpetuate biases, spread misinformation, or leak sensitive data, all drawn from the vast expanse of the internet they’re trained on. This makes stringent oversight a necessity.
