Apple Reportedly Testing ‘Veritas’ Chatbot as Internal Tool for Siri’s AI Overhaul
Apple is quietly testing a new chatbot, codenamed Veritas, as part of its efforts to revamp Siri with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. But unlike rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Apple’s chatbot isn’t designed for public release — at least not yet.
An Employee-Only Experiment
Veritas, which means “truth” in Latin, is reportedly being used internally by Apple employees to test new features for Siri. These include the ability to search through personal data, perform in-app actions such as editing photos, and handle more complex conversational queries.
The chatbot functions much like its competitors: employees can type requests, carry on back-and-forth conversations, and revisit older exchanges to expand on earlier prompts. For now, though, Apple appears committed to keeping Veritas an internal testing tool rather than a consumer-facing product.
Siri’s Delayed Evolution
Apple has faced repeated delays in bringing its next-generation Siri to market. The debut of “Apple Intelligence” earlier this year drew a lukewarm response, with critics arguing it lagged behind offerings from Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
Gurman suggests Apple’s decision not to release Veritas publicly is a mistake, as consumer-facing AI products are shaping perceptions of which companies are leading in artificial intelligence.
Reliance on Google’s Gemini
Instead of pushing Veritas into the public arena, Apple is reportedly preparing to lean more heavily on Google’s Geminifor AI-powered search within iOS. The move could give iPhone users advanced AI search functionality while buying Apple time to refine its own tools.
A Strategic Crossroads
The decision underscores Apple’s cautious approach to artificial intelligence: focusing on privacy, safety, and tight ecosystem integration, but at the risk of falling behind competitors who are moving faster in the AI arms race.
With Veritas in development behind closed doors, Apple may yet deliver a smarter, more capable Siri. But for now, the tech giant seems willing to let others define the cutting edge of AI while it tests quietly in the background.
