Recent findings from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) reveal that North Korean hackers are harnessing the capabilities of generative AI to bolster their cyber espionage activities. According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, a senior NIS official highlighted that these hackers are utilizing AI technologies to identify potential hacking targets and acquire necessary technical know-how, marking a significant shift in cyber warfare tactics.

While the details remain undisclosed, it is evident that North Korean operatives have yet to deploy generative AI in executing direct cyberattacks. Instead, the focus appears to be on employing AI for meticulous planning and strategy development. The UK’s stance on the issue is nuanced.
