Most employees still lack formal training on AI’s risks, and nearly two-thirds worry about AI-driven cybercrime. Bake brief, scenario-based modules into onboarding, push micro-learning through collaboration tools and test staff with simulated “prompt-phishing” exercises. Shadow AI is at heart a cultural issue. Celebrate teams that pioneer safe AI pilots and share their lessons. Encourage staff to ask IT before trying a new tool—then reward that transparency by fast-tracking reviews rather than burying requests in bureaucracy. When employees see security as a partner, not a road-block, clandestine workarounds fade.

The genie is not going back in the bottle. Generative AI will remain irresistible for efficiency-minded staff and cash-strapped teams alike. The question for leaders is whether those tools operate in daylight or lurk in the shadows.
By pairing clear policy with pragmatic data controls, relentless education and a culture that values safe experimentation, organisations can harness AI’s upside while shrinking the insider-threat surface. Fail to act, and the next headline-grabbing breach may not be the work of sophisticated nation-state hackers—but of a well-meaning colleague who pasted the wrong spreadsheet into the wrong chatbot.
